Introduction:

From 1974 to 2002 Northern UFO News provided a unique journal of record chronicling reported UFO activity occurring within northern Britain.

This publication (edited by Jenny Randles throughout its existence) was initiated by an alliance of local Northern UFO societies established in 1973 termed The Northern UFO Network, who agreed to co-operate and work towards various shared objectives.  The creation of Northern UFO News represented the most significant achievements of this collective, resulting in one of the longest-lived journals in British Ufology - one that  outlived virtually all of the societies who originally established it!

A description of the Northern UFO Network, written in 1980:

"...[Due to a] lack of regionalization, and consequent isolation of the north from the [British UFO] scene ... the idea emerged for an alliance between the various UFO factions existent within that region. Hence, the Northern UFO Network (NUFON) came into being in the spring of 1974. NUFON was never intended to rival the national organisations, but to work with them helping to integrate the North more fully into the UFO system in Britain. Chiefly for this reason it maintained an air of informality, which proved a useful feature in its development."

"The main function of NUFON is as a liaison medium. It is open to groups and independent researchers, and counts amongst its associates virtually all of those who are active within the region's Ufology. The differing commitments between various types of ufologist was recognised and is catered for by there being two levels of involvement. This consists of association, for the more active participants, and affiliation for those only peripherally involved. Meetings are frequent and decisions made because they are seen to be to the common good. They are adhered to by trust. There are no rules or regulations, no membership to the network and the independence of all the contributors is a key factor in the concept."

"Investigation standards vary, but it is policy not to dictate technique but to allow the possibility of improvement by working with others more experienced. This does appear to be working, and the NUFON files (available to all participants for reference) have built up into an important repository of data on investigation work within the region, and are housed in a building owned by the Nottingham area group, NUFOIS, associated with the network. NUFON co-ordinates the activity of researchers within the North, and works with the national, and ultimately international organisations so that a sense of integration is maintained. A monthly newsletter, Northern UFO News, is published to give up to the minute information on sighting report and investigation activity..."

The back issues of Northern UFO News represent a significant resource for British UFO research, one which has been difficult to access due to its limited availability. This regrettable state of affairs is one which both Jenny Randles, Gary Anthony and myself (Robert Moore) have decided to address through the medium of this website. Hence, below we present PDF format editions of this magazine for free downloading, as a historical information resource for UFO research. We hope to eventually digitalise and make available all issues of Northern UFO News dating back to at least 1980; an on-going process at the time of writing anticipated to take around a year or so.

As of 24/10/08, ISSUES 140-186 are uploaded on this website - covering the period 1990-2001.

Also presently included on this site are NUN issues 100, 107 and most notably 103; pp15-16 of the latter giving a contemporary description of the "Algar" entity claim (a letter from the claimant to the Ministry Of Defence alluding to this wild story appeared in the first batch of declassified MoD documents and was featured widely in the media as a consequence)!

On a more serious note the late 1991 editions also feature contemporary descriptions of the April 1991 Achille Zaghetti Air-to-Air encounter, information on which was included in the second MoD file release in October 2008 (although the files pertaining to this case were already in the public domain prior to this).
